Ruhanga Development School
The Ruhanga Development
School in Uganda was built and opened in 2008 at the request of villagers
in this rural area of SW Uganda, using money raised by volunteers and
visitors staying at our nearby Uganda Lodge. Numbers rose quickly from 40
children at the beginning of 2009 to over 400 by 2013.
As the school developed, so
new classrooms and other facilities were required, and again, these
developments are down to the generosity of the hundreds of volunteers who
have helped out at the school over the past few years.
Part of the school's success
is that both parents and children alike value the English language skills
volunteers bring with them, rarely available in other schools, and the
enthusiasm of those volunteers when they help out in the classroom, teach
games, read books or simply invest quality time with the children.
You don't need to be
formally qualified to help in the school. All you really need is to be
fluent in English, and even if you are not a Teaching English as a Foreign
Language (TEFL) teacher (although useful!), you can go into the classrooms
and make a meaningful difference. Experienced teachers can take over a
whole class if they wish, after consulting with the teacher on content.
The school is basically free
for the children, although a small registration fee is payable to ensure
the villagers don't see the school as something donated by 'wealthy'
westerners; rather a facility that is theirs and part of their community.
As such, we have a
sponsorship scheme (more details
here) which is just £5.00 a month or
£60.00 a year and that covers the cost of running the school, teacher
salaries, teaching aids, pencils and books, a free uniform and very
importantly a large mug of porridge for each child every morning for
breakfast. It is only because of this ongoing commitment to the children
by sponsors that so many can attend and get an education.
Working at the school offers
a unique insight into children's lives in Uganda and is a memory that both
you and the children will treasure for ever. Unlike many other
volunteering programs the small weekly fee covers the costs of your
accommodation and food and we charge no admin or other fees. Any small
surplus from this fee goes directly to the school and the children to help
improve facilities there.
